Há um número alarmante de pessoas para quem a sinceridade é um atributo notável. Tanto que anunciam a despropósito e sem puder a sua própria sinceridade, normalmente antes de uma observação desagradável. Funciona assim: "Eu sou sincero: essa camisa fica-lhe mal"

Talvez o leitor já tenha reparado num flagelo que assola a sociedade portuguesa. É o flagelo da sinceridade. Há um número alarmante de pessoas para quem a sinceridade é um atributo estimável. Tanto que, ao que tenho testemunhado com cada vez maior frequência, anunciam a despropósito e sem pudor a sua própria sinceridade, normalmente antes de uma observação desagradável. Funciona assim: "Eu sou sincero: essa camisa fica-lhe mal." Como é evidente, o proprietário da camisa fica duplamente amesquinhado: não só está mal vestido como se encontra junto de uma pessoa sincera. Os nossos defeitos parecem ainda piores quando estamos na presença de alguém que é tão obviamente virtuoso. As pessoas com quem me dou sabem bem o que é carregar esse fardo.

É interessante reparar no modo como o autor deste tipo de frase é, em geral, atormentado pela sua própria nobreza de caráter. Outras pessoas teriam a desonestidade de elogiar aquela camisa, ou fariam um silêncio igualmente condenável. O sincero não pode, uma vez que é sincero. Não é desagradável, nem impertinente, nem descortês. É sincero. No fundo, o que está a dizer é: "Não há nada a fazer. Eu bem me esforço para não ser tão moralmente irrepreensível, mas não consigo. É a mais elevada dignidade que me obriga a dizer-te que tens mau gosto."

No entanto, tenho dificuldade em entender que ser sincero seja uma qualidade. Dizer o que se pensa não tem nada de admirável. Penso eu. É fácil (e todos sabemos que o caminho para a virtude é intrincado), revela sobranceria (que têm as minhas opiniões de tão especial para que eu me sinta no dever de as comunicar aos outros?), e é muitas vezes desagradável (os meus pensamentos são, na esmagadora maioria das vezes, de uma inconveniência assinalável). Creio, aliás, que a vida em sociedade se baseia precisamente na nossa maravilhosa capacidade de não revelar o que pensamos. Sim, eu acho que determinada senhora é gorda, mas não lho vou dizer ­ sobretudo se ela mo perguntar. Claro que o odor corporal de certo indivíduo é desagradável, mas ninguém me convence que eu serei uma pessoa melhor se lhe disser: "Eu sou sincero: o senhor cheira a táxi."

O problema, creio, é que a nossa sociedade está erradamente convencida de que a autenticidade é um valor que se deve prezar. "Sê tu mesmo", ouvimos a toda a hora. "Tu deves ser igual a si próprio", dizem-nos também. São, como é óbvio, maus conselhos. Vamos tentar ser um pouco melhores que isso, digo eu. Só se eu fosse parvo é que seria igual a mim próprio. Trata-se de um caminho que não me levaria a lado nenhum. Por que razão devo ser eu mesmo se, com algum empenho, posso tentar ser uma pessoa decente? Não me choca que Shakespeare e Bach tenham passado pela vida a tentar ser eles mesmos, mas é melhor para o mundo que eu e, por exemplo, Charles Manson, tentemos ser diferentes de nós próprios.

Eu sou sincero: vou continuar a ser dissimulado.
